A new homebrew emulator, PS5SX2, lets jailbroken PS5 consoles play many PS2 discs with 4K upscaling, widescreen support and enhanced graphics. However, jailbreaking requires outdated firmware and permanently sacrifices PlayStation Network access, online multiplayer, the Store and newer games. Some CD-based PS2 titles also cannot run directly. With better emulation options available for PCs, Steam Decks and phones, modifying a PS5 offers little benefit and significant risks.

The PS5’s USB ports support much more than controller charging. Distorted PS5 audio should be diagnosed systematically before replacing equipment. After more than 25 years, researchers have reverse engineered the SPC970 MechaCon security chip used in early “fat” PlayStation 2 consoles. An exploit discovered by Libby causes an EEPROM buffer overflow, allowing the chip’s 256KB mask-ROM firmware to be copied out in roughly 1,000 passes. The team released 22 firmware images covering early PS2 models and Namco arcade boards on GitHub. The dumps could enable modchips, region-free exploits, and more accurate low-level emulation, although they do not immediately create an optical drive emulator or unlock encrypted games. The firmware also reveals Sony’s MagicGate and KELF security processes. Unlike the later Dragon MechaCon, the SPC970 cannot be patched, making future exploits more difficult. The dumping process can damage the EEPROM or disable the console, so it carries significant hardware risk.
